World Allergy Day – July 8

July 8 has been designated as World Allergy Day. It was first celebrated in 2005 by the decision of the World Allergy Organization, as part of an effort to raise awareness about the impact of allergies on human health and the adoption of effective preventive measures:

  • Allergies reduce the quality of life.
  • 30% of the global population suffers from some form of allergy.
  • 300,000,000 people suffer from asthma.
  • People with allergies may have difficulty using contact lenses.

Today’s World Allergy Day is an opportunity for reflection as well as action.

UNIQUE BIO 1 Day daily contact lenses can help individuals with allergies who wish to wear contact lenses.

Daily contact lenses are placed in the eye whenever the user wants and are discarded after use at night. This way, the eye is not re-exposed to allergens that may have been transferred to the lens the next time the user wears their lenses.

Additionally, the material of UNIQUE BIO 1 Day contact lenses is energy-neutral, which practically means it does not attract allergens to the lens surface. The lenses stay cleaner and with significantly lower chances of irritation or intolerance.

There are also other options for managing allergies, such as antihistamine pills, nasal sprays, eye drops, and rigid gas-permeable contact lenses.

Myopia Control: What It Is and How It Can Help

Myopia Control, that is, controlling the progression of myopia, can mean a lower prescription for better vision, even when you are not wearing glasses or contact lenses.

Current Approaches

Current approaches to managing myopia progression include atropine, Ortho-K lenses (orthokeratology), and bifocal or multifocal glasses (PALs).

  • Atropine has been shown to slow myopia progression, but it can have side effects such as photophobia and reduced comfort, along with concerns about long-term safety.
  • Ortho-K was originally developed to correct refractive error, but it is believed that flattening the central cornea creates an effective peripheral power profile that may control eye growth. The disadvantages of Ortho-K include discomfort, increased risk of infection, and complexity, often requiring specialized fitting and management skills.
  • Bifocal or multifocal glasses (PALs) have been used to slow myopia progression. Results have been variable and sometimes confusing, possibly due to inconsistent compliance with how the lenses should be viewed.

Today's Solution

  • MiSight daily contact lenses by CooperVision
  • Mylo monthly contact lenses by Mark'Ennovy

MiSight daily contact lenses not only correct existing myopia, providing clear vision at both distance and near, but have also been shown to slow myopia progression in most children. The Myopia Management System is a holistic approach to minimizing myopia progression, combining MiSight lenses with ActivControl™ technology and strategies for better eye health.

At a Glance

  • Reduces myopia progression, allowing better vision when glasses or contact lenses are not worn
  • Reduces the likelihood of developing high myopia (-6.00 D or more), which can lower the risk of eye conditions associated with high myopia, such as retinal detachment and glaucoma
  • Can improve self-esteem in children and adolescents regarding their ability to participate in sports and social activities
